There are beaches you forget as soon as you roll up your towel. And then there are beaches that remain in your memory as a feeling, a color, a silence you find nowhere else.
Tarrafal is such a beach.
Located on the northwest coast of Santiago, the largest island of Cape Verde, Tarrafal combines everything that makes a beach special: white sand, clear water, a relaxed atmosphere, and an authenticity that you no longer find in many popular seaside resorts.
Bruno, local guide for Cape Verde Tours on Santiago, regularly brings guests to Tarrafal. What he sees time and time again: people stepping onto the beach for the first time and immediately understanding why this is the most beautiful place on the island for local Santiaguense people.
Why Tarrafal is different
Santiago is not the most famous beach island in Cape Verde. That label goes to Sal or Boa Vista, with their endless sandy beaches and mass tourism. Santiago is the island for those looking for the authentic Cape Verde. And Tarrafal is the proof that authentic and beautiful can go together perfectly. Read also why Santiago is the best mix to truly taste Cape Verde.
The beach lies in a gentle curve, surrounded by rocks that protect it from the wind. The water is calm and clear, ideal for swimming. The palm trees along the water's edge provide shade. And unlike on the tourist islands, here you simply see the locals: children playing in the water, fishermen preparing their boats, families relaxing on Sunday.
That feeling of a place that is for everyone and not just tourists is precisely what makes Tarrafal so special.
How do you get to Tarrafal
Tarrafal is about 80 kilometers north of Praia, the capital of Santiago. The drive takes an average of 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the route.
By car or taxi: The most comfortable option. Via the west coast you drive through beautiful hills and villages, via the east coast past Pedra Badejo for a different landscape. Both routes are worthwhile. A taxi ride from Praia costs an average of 20 to 30 euros round trip.
For rent: The local variant of public transport. Cheaper, slower, more adventurous. Ask for Tarrafal at the aluguer station in Praia. For a few euros, you'll be in a minivan that leaves as soon as it's full.
With a tour: Tarrafal is part of many day trips on Santiago. This is how you combine the beach with other sights on the island. Want to discover more of Santiago in one trip? Then check out our 7-day Santiago route for a complete overview of the island.

Swimming and activities at Tarrafal
The water at Tarrafal is warm and calm. Ideal for a relaxing swim. The waves are generally mild, but always check on the day itself because the ocean can change.
Around the beach there are also rock pools that form beautiful natural swimming pools at low tide. Children love them, but adults also find enjoyment there.
Those who enjoy snorkeling are in luck: the rocks on the sides of the beach harbor colorful fish and coral formations. Bring your own snorkeling gear, as on-site rentals are limited.
Food and drinks by the beach
Along the boulevard of Tarrafal are small restaurants and beach cafes serving fresh fish, cachupa, and other local dishes. This is the moment to discover Cape Verdean cuisine: grilled tuna, fried squid, or a plate of cachupa rica on a terrace with a sea view.
Prices are low and portions are large. Order an ice-cold Strela beer or a fresh sumo with it and you have a perfect afternoon.
Overnight stay in Tarrafal
If you want to stay longer, and you will want to, there are a few guesthouses and small inns in Tarrafal. Simple but clean, and almost always with a warm welcome. Overnight stays cost an average of between 25 and 50 euros per night.
The village itself is charming, with a market, small shops, and a slower pace than Praia. Ideal if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Practical tips for your visit

The journey is the destination
Whether you choose the tour via the west coast or the east coast, the road to Tarrafal is an experience in itself. Green valleys, sugar cane fields, views of the sea and small villages where life has its own pace.
Don't let the car go too fast. Stop if something catches your attention. Because in Cape Verde you quickly learn: the road is just as beautiful as the destination. And Tarrafal as the end point only makes it better.
