Holiday to Cape Verde: answers to the most frequently asked questions

Kaapverdië Santiago eiland natuur en cultuur

Cape Verde is on the radar for more and more Dutch people as a holiday destination. And rightly so. But we also get many questions: is it safe? What does it cost? Do I need to be able to speak Portuguese? In this article, Bruno, a local guide for Kaapverdië Tours on Santiago, answers the most frequently asked questions from travelers visiting Cape Verde for the first time.

1. Is Cape Verde safe for tourists?

Absolutely. Cape Verde is internationally known as one of the safest travel destinations in Africa. According to Risk Map 2025 by International SOS, published by Forbes, Cape Verde is one of the safest countries to visit. The country has a stable democracy, a friendly population, and a peaceful atmosphere. On Santiago, the island where Bruno is active daily, you experience that safety firsthand.

2. When is the best time to visit Cape Verde?

All year round. Cape Verde has one of the most stable climates in the world, with temperatures between 22 and 30 degrees and little rain. The period from November to July is ideal for hikers and travelers who want to explore the interior. The summer months from August to October are warmer and sometimes have a bit more wind, but are great for a beach holiday.

3. How long is the flight from the Netherlands to Cape Verde?

Just about a six-hour flight from the Netherlands, usually via a direct flight to Sal, Boa Vista, or Santiago (Praia). That makes a holiday to Cape Verde a surprisingly comfortable choice: no long travel time, yet a completely different island vibe.

4. Which island suits me best?

That depends on what you are looking for. Do you want beach and relaxation? Then Sal and Boa Vista are ideal. Do you want nature and adventure? Then look at Santo Antão. Do you want culture, mountains, history, and beach all in one vacation? Then is Santiago the best choice. This island combines most of what Cape Verde has to offer and is perfect if you really want to get to know the country. Read also why Santiago is the best choice for your vacation.

5. How much does a vacation to Cape Verde cost?

Cape Verde is more affordable than many people think. Flights from the Netherlands cost on average between 350 and 600 euros per person, depending on the season. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses for 30 to 50 euros per night to comfortable hotels. Eating at local restaurants is inexpensive and delicious. A guided day tour via Cape Verde Tours is a small investment that makes your vacation a lot richer.

6. What language do they speak in Cape Verde?

The official language is Portuguese, but most Cape Verdeans speak Kriolu (Cape Verdean Creole) among themselves. On the larger islands and in tourist areas, you can easily get by with English or even Dutch. Cape Verdeans are hospitable and happy to help you. A few words of Portuguese or Kriolu are always greatly appreciated.

7. What is the currency and can I pay by card?

The currency is the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE). In Praia and the larger villages, you can easily withdraw money from ATMs. It is wise to also have some cash with you, especially outside the city. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, but in the countryside, you will almost always pay in cash.

8. Do I need a visa as a Dutch citizen?

Dutch nationals do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days. However, you do need a valid passport and must fill out an arrival card upon entry. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel date.

9. What should I absolutely not miss in Santiago?

Santiago has so much to offer. Bruno's absolute top recommendations:

  • A visit to Cidade Velha, the oldest city of Cape Verde and UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • A walk through the mountainous interior of Serra Malagueta
  • A relaxing day at the beach of Tarrafal
  • A city tour of Beach with the local Sucupira market
  • From Pico de Antónia hike for those who love adventure
  • Tasting Cape Verdean dishes like cachupa and fresh grilled fish

10. Is Cape Verde suitable for families with children?

Sure. Cape Verde is an ideal family destination. The islands are safe, the people are warm and child-friendly, and there is enough variety to keep everyone busy: from calm beaches and swimming to light walks and cultural trips. Santiago also offers guided tours that are perfect for families with children of various ages.

11. How can I best plan my vacation to Santiago?

The keywords are: not planning too full. A holiday to Cape Verde is all about the island feeling: slow, relaxed and present. Bruno’s tip is to make a mix of one or two guided day trips and free days to walk, swim or enjoy the local atmosphere. Also check out our 7-day Santiago route for inspiration.
