Bruno regularly guides families with young children on Santiago, and the most frequently asked question is invariably: is this actually a suitable destination for kids? The answer is a resounding yes, provided you arrange a few practical things in advance.
Cape Verdeans love children
Cape Verde has a strong family culture, and children are welcomed with open arms everywhere: in restaurants, at the market, during tours. Santiago does not have mass tourism, so your child won't blend in with hundreds of other families in a resort, but will instead receive personal attention from locals.
Vaccinations: what is needed for your child?
There are no mandatory vaccinations for Cape Verde. For children following the National Immunization Program, additional vaccinations are usually not necessary, although it is wise to check whether a DTP or Hepatitis A vaccination needs a booster. Make an appointment with GGD Reisvaccinaties six to eight weeks before departure for personal advice, especially with young children or a baby. We are not medical advisors, so for definitive advice we always refer you to the GGD or your family doctor.
Mosquitoes and Zika: what you need to know
Cape Verde experienced a Zika outbreak in 2015-2016, but currently there is no active outbreak and the risk is negligible. Standard mosquito protection (during the day, as the mosquitoes that can transmit Zika mainly bite in daylight) is sufficient precaution. Pregnant women are advised to be extra cautious and to discuss this with their doctor before departure.
Is Santiago safe for families?
Yes. Cape Verde is internationally considered one of the safest destinations in Africa. Read our comprehensive article about safety in Santiago for the full story.
What activities are suitable for children?
- Tarrafal beach: calm water, wide sandy beaches, ideal for a relaxing family day
- Old Town compact and easy to walk, with plenty to see and discover for curious children
- Easy hikes: choose a beginner hike like Cidade Velha or Rui Vaz instead of the harder Pico de Antónia climb
- Markets: the colorful atmosphere of Sucupira or Assomada is an adventure in itself for children
We advise against heavier hikes with many elevation changes, such as Pico de Antónia, for young children. Discuss with your guide in advance which tour best suits your children's age: we are happy to adjust the pace and route.
Practical tips for on the go
- Bring sufficient sun protection: the sun is stronger than in the Netherlands, even if it doesn't feel oppressively warm
- Pack insect repellent for the daytime, especially during trips to the interior.
- Cash is handy: not every local eatery accepts a debit card
- Schedule rest days: the pace in Santiago is relaxed, and your holiday can be too

Yes, the mandatory online pre-registration (EASE) including airport tax applies to all travelers, including children.
