While most travellers associate Santiago with Praia or Tarrafal beach, Assomada shows you real everyday life. Short answer: Assomada is about a 50-minute drive from Praia, the market is at its liveliest on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and a visit combines well with the kapok tree of Boa Entrada, just 2 km away.

Why Assomada is worth a visit

Since 1912 Assomada has been the main town of the municipality of Santa Catarina, and with over 21,000 inhabitants (2021 census) it is Santiago's second city after Praia. The town runs on trade, banking, transport and education, and even has its own university. For travellers one thing stands out: here you see Cape Verde as everyday life really is, without any tourist dressing-up. No beach resorts, no souvenir stalls for tourists, just a working market town in the green highlands.

Assomada market: when to go and what to expect

Assomada market was founded in 1931 and is one of the largest on the island of Santiago. Farmers from across the region come to sell vegetables, fruit, herbs and handmade products, alongside clothing and household goods. According to local tour providers, the market is at its busiest and liveliest on Wednesdays and Saturdays; on other days Assomada is quieter and more of a town visit than a full market experience. So if the market itself is your main goal, ideally plan your visit for one of these two days.

Boa Entrada: Santiago's kapok tree

About 2 km north of Assomada's centre lies Boa Entrada, a small village with one remarkable sight: a huge kapok tree about 25 metres tall, considered the largest tree on Santiago and possibly in all of Cape Verde. In Cape Verdean Creole this type of tree is called “poilon”. The tree is also a protected habitat for a colony of purple herons.

A small correction we like to make: several tour providers call this tree a “baobab”. Botanically that is not correct; it is a kapok tree (also known as a silk-cotton tree), a different tree family from the baobab. Both are impressive and photogenic, but it's good to know what you're actually looking at.

Serra Malagueta: green highlands on the road to Tarrafal

About 11 km north of Assomada, still on the same road towards Tarrafal, lies Serra Malagueta Natural Park. This is one of the greenest and coolest areas of Santiago, with views all the way to the coast. If you actually want to hike here, we already have a dedicated, in-depth hiking tour: read more about the Serra Malagueta hike. A visit to Assomada itself is a different kind of day: more market and culture, less walking. You can combine both on the same route if you set aside a full day.

Local food and lunch in and around Assomada

Santiago's interior is known for its farming, and you can taste it on your plate. Around Assomada you'll find simple local restaurants where you can try typical Cape Verdean dishes, often with fresh vegetables and fruit from the surrounding fields. A lunch stop in or just outside Assomada is a natural part of a day visit, especially if you combine the market with a visit to Boa Entrada.

How to get from Praia to Assomada

The drive from Praia to Assomada takes about 50 minutes along the main road through the interior. You can travel independently by aluguer (the local shared minibus) or taxi, or choose a rental car or private transfer for more comfort and flexibility. See our complete guide to getting around Santiago for all options, including price indications.

How much time do you need for Assomada?

For the market, the centre of Assomada and a visit to Boa Entrada, allow at least half a day, including the round trip from Praia. If you want to extend the day with a visit to Tarrafal beach, you'll be out for a full day: the drive from Assomada to Tarrafal is another 29 km or so along the same road. Read more about this combination in our article about Tarrafal beach.

On your own or with a local guide

You can visit Assomada on your own: the market is open to the public and Boa Entrada is easy to find. A local guide adds most value through context: what you see at the market, how the local community works, and practical details such as the best time to arrive. For travellers who are short on time or would rather not work out how to get there themselves, a guided day trip is the relaxed option.

Practical tips for your visit to Assomada

For the full market experience, go on a Wednesday or Saturday; other days are quieter.

Bring cash (CVE); card payments are not accepted at the market.

Ask permission before photographing people at the market; it is appreciated.

Combine your visit with Boa Entrada; it's only 2 km away and takes little extra time.

Wear comfortable clothing that protects you from the sun; the interior is warmer than the coast, but it can feel cool early in the morning.

Frequently asked questions about Assomada

How far is Assomada from Praia?

Assomada is about a 50-minute drive from Praia, along the main road through Santiago's interior.

What is the best day to visit Assomada market?

According to local tour providers, Wednesday and Saturday are the busiest and liveliest market days.
