Cape Verde is such a place. But if you want to go a step further, if you really want to feel what Morabeza means, then you start with Kriolu.

Kriolu, also spelled Criolo, Cape Verdean Creole, or Krioulo, is the native language of nearly all Cape Verdeans. It is the language of the street, the market, the grogue, and the heart. Portuguese is the official language, but Kriolu is the soul of the country.

What exactly is Kriolu?

Kriolu is a Creole language that originated from contact between Portuguese colonists and West African slaves, somewhere in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries on the islands. The basis is Portuguese, but the grammar, sounds, and a large part of the vocabulary have been heavily influenced by languages from sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from Mandé to Wolof.

The result is a language that sounds like a melody. Fluent, fast, expressive. Anyone hearing Kriolu for the first time might think of Portuguese with an unfamiliar mix, but those who listen closely will soon recognize its own unique beauty.

There are several different variants. Santiago has its own version, called Badiu, which sounds somewhat rougher and more African than, for example, the Mindelo variant of São Vicente. If you visit Santiago, you will hear Badiu all around you.

Why learn Kriolu as a visitor?

You don't need to become a fluent speaker. A handful of sentences and words is enough to open doors that would otherwise remain closed.

Cape Verdeans are generally warm and hospitable, but when you greet them in Kriolu, something changes. Their faces light up. People smile and are surprised. They sense that you respect their culture and their country. And that’s priceless as a traveler.

The tourism industry on Santiago is still relatively small-scale. Many locals speak limited English or Dutch. So a few words of Kriolu can also just come in handy.

The most important words and phrases

Greetings:

Morabeza: not literally translatable. It stands for the warm hospitality, friendliness, and relaxed atmosphere that Cape Verde is known for. If you remember one word, let it be this one.

Good morninggood morning

Good afternoon: Good afternoon

Good eveningGood evening

Hi of Hellohi

Useful in conversations:

Thank you (for men) Thank you thank you

Pleaseplease

Sorrysorry or excuse me

How are you?how are you?

I'm doing well, thank youGood, thank you.

Food and drinks:

How good it isThe grog is tasty

A coffee, pleaseone coffee, please

What do you want to buy?How much does it cost?

If you are lost:

Where is Undi?where is it?

I don't understandI don't understand

Speak slowly, pleasespeak more slowly, please

What does Kriolu sound like?

Santiago Crioulo has a warm, dark timbre. The ‘r’ is sometimes rolled, sometimes pronounced softly. Vowels are held longer than in Dutch. The language has a rhythm that reminds you of music, and perhaps that is no coincidence, because Cape Verde is the land of the morna.

If you want to practice before your departure, online dictionaries and simple learning tools are available. But the best way to learn Kriolu? Just start as soon as you set foot on Santiago.

Kriolu as heritage

There is also a serious side to this story. Kriolu is more than a means of communication. It is a testament to resilience and cultural identity. For generations it was an unofficial language, subordinate to the Portuguese that colonists brought with them. But Cape Verdeans kept their language alive: in music, in stories, at the dinner table.

Today, pride in Kriolu is growing. There are efforts to standardize and officially recognize it. The language is flourishing in poetry, literature, and popular music.

As a visitor who speaks a few words of Kriolu, you contribute to that recognition in a small but sincere way.

Finally

You don't have to be a linguistic genius. You don't have to take a course. But if you go to Santiago and you greet the market woman with Good morning, if you say after your grog Thank you with a smile, when you say goodbye Bye says, then you are already more than a tourist.

Then you are someone who has truly tried to understand Cape Verde.

And the people here won't forget that anytime soon.

Discover Kriolu, the language of Cape Verde.
